West of Arpin, Wisconsin, is Powers Bluff Maple Woods State Natural Area. Early in the spring, before the maple trees leaf out, you can find a fantastic display of spring flowers on the forest floor. A sweeping carpet of trillium is especially impressive. Trillium partially gets its name due to itʼs leaves, petals, and sepals occurring in threes. To many, trillium blooming in the spring is also a reminder of Easter and the Trinity. 

Also called White-flowered Trillium, the Large-flowered Trillium is one of four trillium species in Wisconsin. After blooming, itʼs flowers turn pink with age, and later ants disperse seeds. 

Powers Bluff has both environmental and historical importance. Previously known as Skunk Hill, it is a 250-foot high quartzite hill serving as a visible landmark in Wood County. North American residents were present well before the 1800ʼs and became numerous in the early 1900ʼs. Members of the Prairie Band Potawatomi made their way to the area as Skunk Hill was firmly established in their belief systems. The Dream Dance played a central role in tribal ceremonies. Stone remnants of the previous habitation are found in the area
