Just west of Arpin, Wisconsin is Powers Bluff Maple Woods State Natural Area. Early in the spring, prior to the maple trees leafing out, an amazing display of spring flowers can be found on the forest floor. A sweeping carpet of trillium is especially impressive. Trillium gets its name in part due to itʼs leaves, petals and sepals occurring in threes. To many, trillium blooming in the spring is also a reminder of Easter and the Trinity.

Also called White-flowered Trillium, the Large flowered Trillium is one of four species of trillium in Wisconsin. Blooming in early spring, itʼs flowers turn pink with age. Seeds are dispersed by ants.

Powers Bluff has both an environmental and historical importance. Previously known as Skunk Hill, it is a 250 foot high quartzite hill serving as a visible landmark in Wood County. North American residents were present well before the 1800ʼs and became numerous in the early 1900ʼs. Members of the Prairie Band Potawatomi made their way to the area as Skunk Hill had been firmly established in their belief systems. The Dream Dance played a central role in tribal ceremonies. Stone remnants of previous habitation can be found through out the area.
