I believe we photograph best what we admire and know most. Central Wisconsin is a unique location, my home for over 40 years, and is the focus of my photography.
MORE ABOUT WHERE I LIVEWisconsin’s landscape formed during many glacial periods over the past million years. The last glacier retreated from the area about 12,000 years ago.
About 23,000 years ago, Wisconsin Glaciation covered much of the state. Glaciers grew in harsh winters and withdrew during mild winters and warm summers. The landscape shows patterns of this growth and retreat caused by the seasonal changes.
Wisconsin’s last glaciation began near the North Pole and grew fast over lakes and lowlands. The glacier grew over Lake Michigan but went around the highlands of today’s Upper Peninsula. The Green Bay Lobe of the glacier snowballed into eastern Wisconsin, reaching just east of where I live in Portage County. I can see the results of the glacial growth and retreat all around our home.
Sometimes, streams and sudden outbursts of large glacial lakes cut gaps in the terminal moraine. Large lakes formed when downstream ice dams blocked outflows until they too failed, and a massive release of water carved through the downstream landscape.
My photos and blog tell the story of our glacial heritage and how it altered the landscape of Wisconsin.
